Reviews
Maurice Peress conducted Duke Ellington's BLACK, BROWN AND BEIGE, a work [Ellington] composed for the first concert his band gave at Carnegie Hall in 1943. Hearing it, one realizes again Ellington's great gift for melody. A work may be both emphatic and lovely at the same time. You hear a tune that is clearly patriotic-the premiere was during World War II-and tunes that are sweet and swinging. The performance was crisp and evocative.
