Reviews

  • ...you cannot resist Gould’s mastery of orchestration, keen ear for harmony and ability to fold myriad styles into his own voice. The performance was dazzling, though, as with most Spring for Music programs, the music was the star.
Anthony Tommasini, The New York Times, 08/05/2013
  • I'm delighted to discover Morton Gould's 1947 SYMPHONY NO. 3...[which] bristles with urgency and vitality from start to finish. It makes no concession to populism; it's polytonal, sinewy, vehement, monumental, grim or sardonic as often as triumphant. Movement I is an intense enigmatic fantasy; Movement II is a sort of summer-night pastoral darkened with fleeting hints of anxiety; III is a stormy, manic fugal scherzo with a buoyant trio; and IV is a rondo finale that builds to a powerful climax. The Albany Symphony's performance is thrilling and the recording is spectacular. This one's a stunner.
