Kaija Saariaho's Orion is a richly harmonic labyrinth ... [a] rewarding survey of new music.
Philip Clark, Classic FM Magazine, 01 December 2005
-
Saariaho’s Orion is more elemental but never over-scored … [the] second movement, with its pedal tones and delicate, slowly shifting sonorities, gives that rare sense of a composer knowing exactly where she wants to go and how to get there.
Arved Ashby, The Gramophone, 01 December 2005
-
It's far gentler than anything of hers I had heard hitherto, a long-limbed play of colour and timbre, subtle and sensitive, the weight sensed rather than perceived until Saariaho unleashes a surge of power that was new in her work in L'Amour de loin ... the new sense of scale points to further discoveries in the works to come.
Martin Anderson, Finnish Music Quarterly, 01 October 2005
-
Kaija Saariaho's Orion, written in 2002 for the Cleveland Orchestra, depicts the mythological hunter transported into the starry night sky with astonishing orchestral imagination. The BBC SO is in its element here, under Jukka-Pekka Saraste, and the recordings are exceptionally vivid.
Anthony Burton, BBC Music Magazine, 01 August 2005
-
The refinement of Kaija Saariaho's writing in her ambitious three-movement symphonic poem, Orion, comes as a relief.
Paul Driver, The Sunday Times, 26 June 2005
