Programme Note

The soundtrack for The Cook is dominated by Memorial which was originally written literally as a memorial for the 39 Juventus fans who were killed in the Heysel Stadium in Brussels in 1985. Four years later I ‘donated’ this tragic, valuable piece to Peter Greenaway for his film. So it had a life before The Cook, during The Cook, and after The Cook - most notably for the brilliant Russian ice dancers, Oskana ”Pasha” Grischuk and Evegny Platov who, very flatteringly for me, chose to use my music for their gold medal routine in the 97/98 Winter Olympics. In honour for their honour to me, in absence of the brilliant Sarah Leonard who has made the taxingly high voice part her own, I am including an instruments-only version of Memorial to this concert.

Reviews

  • It's a very worthy tribute to those who lost their lives.
