Programme Note
This work was composed in 1985, the tercentenary of Bach, Handel and Scarlatti, whose influence could not be avoided and is hereby gratefully acknowledged. Originally scored for two solo cornets and brass band, Concertino Classico is also available in versions by the composer for two trumpets (or cornets) and piano, and with the brass band accompaniment replaced by string orchestra.

The Concertino Classico, commissioned as part of the 1985 Bach Tercentenary for the Danish Hjorring Brass Band. Here cornet soloists Gemma Fuller and Lucy leleu, conducted by RCM graduate Simon Dobson, projected their frothy contrapuntal intertwining with virtuosity, and, as in a remix of Bach’s double violin concerto, created a ravishing aura of suave lyricism in the aria-like slow movement.
