Programme Note

Originally written for oboe d'amore and piano, but also available in a version for Clarinet, this short introduction and rondo was written for a Royal Gala Concert at the Empire Theatre, Liverpool, in 1971 in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II - the première was given by Jennifer Paull with the composer at the piano. It is a fairly light piece in character, with a lyrical Lento followed by a jazzy, rhythmical Allegro Giocoso. It is also written fairly strictly along twelve-tone rules - it was, in a sense, a challenge to write a piece that would be pretty much light music while using a contemporary technique. In other words, the rigorousness of the technique is disguised by the lightness of the music. Thus, ostinati, canons and variation devices form an important part in developing the apparently simple material.
