Samuel Barber's Hermit Songs updates texts from Irish monasteries of the Middle Ages. In the piece, with piano parts that suggest the hollow harmonies of early polyphony and with brittle, sharp-edged virtuoso writing, plaintive messages arrive from the past: about loneliness, lust, religious ardor and the joys of solitude.
