Programme Note
Composer Note:
Fifth Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman (for four trumpets), written for Joan Harris, was commissioned by the Aspen Music Festival on the occasion of the opening of the Joan and Irving Harris Concert Hall on August 20, 1993. This fanfare is the fifth in a series dedicated to “uncommon” women women who take risks and are adventurous in their actions and goals.

Reviews
-
To open was Joan Tower’s commissioned “Fifth Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman” (you recognize, of course, her slightly sarcastic reference to Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man”?). For four trumpets and conducted by the composer, this short, active and attractive piece proved a fine opener.
Glen Giffin, The Denver Post, 23/09/1993
