Programme Note
Angele Dei (Angel of God) is a prayer to the guardian angel, suitable for general liturgical use, in particular as an introit, anthem or blessing at the Feast of the Holy Archangels or for concert performance.
The piece was composed as a parting gift for Kate’s great friend and colleague Harriet Gedge. Recorded by the BBC Singers, conducted by Bob Chilcott on 19 November 2010 at St Paul’s Church, Knightsbridge, London, it was subsequently sung at Harriet’s funeral in Brecon Cathedral on 16 December 2010.
Ángele Dei, qui custos es mei, me, tibi commissum pietáte supérna, hodie illúmina, custódi, rege et gubérna. Amen.
Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day, be at my side to light and love, to rule and guide. Amen.

Kate Johnson’s serene short prayer to a guardian angel is most appealing (…) for me. Basses have several bottom Cs (some optional) and all parts are divisi with three soprano parts at the end. There are solos for soprano and tenor- the latter ends the piece, very brief but very exposed.
