A tuba concerto is no laughing matter… [these] concertos each explore the dynamic range, huge tessitura and lyrical possibilities of an instrument in the hands of an exceptional soloist. James Gourlay is a considerable player, an imposing presence in the Gregson Concerto with his glowing lyricism (he conveys a strong brass-band identity but nuanced with a thoughtful and cultivated chamber-music sound) and a direct, unequivocal exponent of bright and immediate articulation throughout. The Royal Ballet Sinfonia [relish] the cut and thrust of the Gregson.
Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, The Gramophone, 01 April 2006

James Gourlay is an excellent soloist, and there's generally lively orchestral support ... it isn't only lovers of the tuba's elephantine charms who'll find this an enjoyable programme.
Anthony Burton, BBC Music Magazine, 01 April 2006
