Reviews

  • Heroes, like Glass's first symphony Low, is a response to Bowie and Brian Eno's albums inspired by 1970s Berlin. It's quite different in form: the six movements reflect its origin as a ballet score, and instead of symphonic elaboration all but the finale present mediations on the songs in an often luminous orchestral palette. 'Sons of the Silent Age' takes well to the trumpet, others use soaring violins, all set against Glas's repeated figures and chord sequences. You don't get Bowie's eerie voice, but a new sense of space and unexpected elegance. The Light was Glass's first piece for orchestra alone, one of his most dynamic movements, built from two nagginlgy memorable progressions and a long build-up of proliferating patterns given plenty of punch by the Bournemouth players.
